about

This song was written in 2012. I had aspirations to be a political journalist and photographer in my early 20's. I had studied anthropology and it seemed to be where my life was headed. I got a call one Sunday morning from my friend Chris. "Cami come photograph an illegal shack removal in Philipi". So I got in the car and I drove to Philipi with Chris and Ken, and another woman whose name I cant remember. We found the place. The area was surrounded by kaspers. An afrikaans officer asked me what we were doing here, asked if we were the media. We said no we were students. he told us not to be here, that we shouldnt throw stones. We carried onto into the area that was set for demolishion. The police had come in the morning, without warrants, and told the shack dwellers that they were to be forceably removed that afternoon. Most of the inhabitants were women with their children. We stayed until the removal force came. They were driven in in bakkies, men with iron rods and orange municipal vests. The battle started, with Abahlali holding up the front line, and to be honest I have blanked it out, all I remember now is taking photographs and being pulled into the car as a man ran at me with a rod. Arrests were made, Jared Sacks remained at he scene sending updates. We drove off. I wrote newspaper articles and managed to get an interview with John Matham on 702. He was cagey and difficult, he and a goverment official who they had gotten on the air to answer questions. They spoke above the general listeners heads, it felt like a dead end..

lyrics

If you knew what I knew
You'd probably drink this much too
If you saw what I saw
You wouldn't judge my whisky paw
If you'd be where I'd been
The day the men with the iron rods rolled in
You'd fight the same fight I do
You'd fight the same fight I do
It wasnt the first time those Kaspirs rolled in unannounced
with no authority or official around to answer questions
to answer questions
So many questions unanswered
So many truths unsaid
So many questions unanswered
So many lies
If you knew what I knew
You'd probably drink this much too
If you saw what I saw
You wouldn't judge my whisky paw
If you'd be where I'd been
The day the men with the iron rods rolled in
You'd fight the same fight I do
You'd fight the same fight I do
